On September 6, 2023, at 10:31 AM, members of the Colorado Springs Police Department were dispatched to East Platte Avenue and South Powers Boulevard for a three-car traffic crash. Initial reports indicated that witnesses to the crash were attempting CPR on the driver of one of the vehicles.
Upon arrival, officers learned that the driver of one of the vehicles was deceased on the scene. Due to the nature of the crash, the Major Crash Team was contacted and responded to assume the investigation.
The investigation showed that three cars were stopped westbound on Platte at Powers when a fourth car approached from behind and struck the stopped vehicles. Speed and alcohol are not considered factors in this investigation currently.
On September 7, 2023, the El Paso County Coroner's Office conducted an autopsy of the deceased driver. The deceased driver of the fourth vehicle has been identified as 62-year-old Colorado Springs resident Dwwayne Hill.
This is the 31st fatal traffic crash in Colorado Springs this year. Last year, at this same time, there were 40 fatal traffic crashes in Colorado Springs and 47 total fatalities in the past 365 days.
