On July 29, 2023, at 12:07 a.m., members of the Colorado Springs Police Department, Sand Creek Division, were dispatched to a two-car traffic crash at the intersection of E Fountain Boulevard and Jetwing Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered that a west-bound vehicle on E Fountain Boulevard. ran a red light and struck a south-bound vehicle on Jetwing Drive. Medical and Fire Department personnel arrived on scene to provide aid to the drivers. One of the drivers was determined to be deceased on the scene. Due to the nature of the crash, the Major Crash Team was contacted and responded to the scene to assume the investigation.
During the investigation, Major Crash Team Detectives learned that the vehicle traveling west on E Fountain Boulevard was previously observed driving at a high rate of speed without any headlights on. Both alcohol and speed are contributing factors in this investigation. The westbound driver, 19-year-old Luke Johnson, was arrested and booked at the El Paso Criminal Justice Center for Vehicular Homicide and Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.
On Saturday, July 29, 2023, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy of the deceased driver. That driver has been identified as a 28-year-old Colorado Springs resident Amanda Trujillo. This is the 27th fatal traffic crash in Colorado Springs for 2023. At this same time last year, there were 26 fatal traffic crashes. Colorado Springs has had 57 fatal traffic crashes in the past 365 days.
